Elba Island can be reached by boarding in Piombino Marittima, where several ferry companies operate comfortable ferries with daily crossings.
In about one hour of navigation, the 10 kilometres that separate the island from the mainland are covered, arriving at the ports of Portoferraio (the main one), Cavo and Rio Marina. Alternatively, there is a fast hydrofoil connection, reserved for passenger transport only, which reaches Cavo and Portoferraio in about 15 and 35 minutes respectively.

From Milan take the A1 motorway, then join the A15 at Parma Ovest to reach the A12 Genova–Livorno motorway. Exit at Rosignano and continue on the S.S. Aurelia to Venturina–Isola d’Elba, then follow the signs to Piombino Marittima.
Take the A1 motorway Bologna–Firenze–Pisa–Livorno: exit at Rosignano and continue on the S.S. Aurelia to Venturina–Isola d’Elba, then follow the signs to Piombino Marittima.
Alternatively, take the S.G.C. Firenze–Pisa–Livorno: exit at Firenze Scandicci and follow the S.S. to Collesalvetti, rejoin the motorway to Rosignano Marittima, then take the expressway to Venturina–Isola d’Elba and from there continue to Piombino Marittima.
Take the A12 motorway Roma–Grosseto, then the S.S. Aurelia exit Venturina–Isola d’Elba and continue to Piombino Marittima.
Elba Island can also be easily reached without a car, using bus, train or plane, with connections that allow you to comfortably arrive at the port of Piombino Marittima or directly on the island.
Bus connections operate from several Italian cities to Piombino Marittima, often with intermediate stops along the route. During certain periods of the year, especially in summer, direct connections are available that make it easier to reach the port in time for ferry departures.
