This trail follows the entire ridge of the island, connecting most of the paths in the hiking network and offering the opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary geological, vegetational and morphological variety of the Elban territory.
The GTE is also designed to be completed in stages. Along its entire route it intersects numerous connecting paths that quickly lead to inhabited centres. Here it is possible to find accommodation of every kind or use public transport to comfortably return to your place of stay.
The route begins in the town of Cavo and, following the ridge, develops westward passing above Porto Azzurro. The trail then continues inland until it reaches the slopes of Monte Perone and approaches the area of Monte Capanne, the mountainous heart of the island. At this point the GTE splits into two variants:
The Grande Traversata Elbana is a unique hiking experience that combines nature, breathtaking landscapes and the authenticity of Elban villages, making it an unmissable itinerary for all trekking and nature lovers.

A few minutes from the historic centre of Marciana, the cableway allows you to reach the highest peak of Elba Island, Monte Capanne (1,019 m). Built in the early 1960s and completely renovated in 2005, the system reaches the upper station at 950 metres above sea level in about 18 minutes, ensuring comfort and safety during the ascent.
From the top of Monte Capanne an extraordinary panorama opens up, offering a complete view of Elba Island, the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica; on the clearest days it is also possible to clearly distinguish the profile of the Tuscan mainland coast. The wide view allows many landscape elements to be recognised with the naked eye, offering an experience similar to that of ancient cartographers.
The descent by cableway, made pleasant by the sea breeze, offers another perspective on the coast and the picturesque village of Marciana, creating a charming and evocative experience.
The Mining Park of Elba Island is much more than a place to visit: it is a journey through history, nature and emotions. Established in 1991 to recover areas marked by ancient iron mining and to enhance local communities, it preserves a geological, mineralogical and historical heritage of immense value.
Here, in the heart of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, every corner tells a story. Among old railway tracks and surreal landscapes, you can walk, cycle or explore by small train or military off-road vehicle, discovering a world suspended in time. Colours, shapes and rocks become a true “garden of mineral flowers”, silent witnesses to the work and passion of the people who transformed these mountains.
Visiting the Mining Park means being carried away by a unique emotion: breathing the energy of the earth, listening to the stories of its people and living an authentic and unforgettable experience in the heart of Elba Island.

The characteristic small train leads visitors to discover the most important and ancient mines of Elba Island, offering an unforgettable experience in the land of iron. During the visit there is a stop at the impressive mining site of Valle Giove, where it is possible to search for samples of pyrite and hematite to keep.
Departure from the Mineral Museum of Rio Marina.

An incredible adventure aboard a real military vehicle: a VM90 with 8 seats, which will take you along evocative off-road routes to discover the mining sites and search for the most famous Elban minerals.
